Where to go for Vienna’s Christmas markets without the crowds

For Vienna’s Christmas markets without the worst of the crowds, I’d skip the centre and head for the market at Schönbrunn Palace. There’s punch, mulled wine, good food and things for children to do. It’s the market that finally rewrote my bad memories of the crush in the city centre.

When are the Vienna Christmas markets in 2026? The first ones opened on Friday 6 November, at Schönbrunn Palace and in Stephansplatz. The best-known market, in Rathausplatz, opens on Friday 13 November 2026. The last stalls at Schönbrunn and in the Prater won’t close until 6 January 2027. Below you’ll find the dates and opening hours of 13 markets, punch prices, how to get there from Bratislava and public transport tickets. Dates, opening hours and transport prices come from official sources and are correct as of 6 November 2026.

For a long time, though, Vienna’s Christmas markets brought back unpleasant memories, even a bit of trauma. Let me tell you why. As a child I was ‘required’ to go to them on school trips, which meant only one thing: I wasn’t eighteen, so all they would sell me was hot chocolate and Kaiserschmarrn, Austria’s shredded sweet pancake.

It was cold, my classmates and I hung around the stalls with nothing to do, and all I really wanted was to go home. On a student budget, the culinary wonders of Vienna’s Christmas markets were mostly out of reach anyway.

Then one day I read an article claiming that, as adults, we can ‘rewrite’ an unpleasant childhood memory with a better experience. That was all I needed. I got on a bus to Vienna, determined to do the Christmas markets differently. This time, though, I decided to avoid the classic markets in the centre and went to the market at Schönbrunn Palace instead. And believe me, it was worth it.

When are the Vienna Christmas markets in 2026? Dates and opening hours of every market

Vienna doesn’t have one Christmas market but more than 10. Each has its own dates and opening hours, and that’s the first thing worth checking before you travel, because most of them close as early as 23 December. The city’s official tourism website, wien.info, has published the 2026 dates, and the table also gives you the nearest U-Bahn (underground) or tram stop.

Tuesday 8 December is a public holiday in Austria. Markets that list separate hours for weekends and public holidays keep their weekend hours that day. On Christmas Eve, the markets that are still running close early. Rathausplatz shuts at 6.30pm; Schönbrunn, Stephansplatz, Maria-Theresien-Platz and Schwarzenbergplatz at 4pm; Belvedere and the Prater at 5pm.

  • Tip from Milan If you’re in Vienna before Friday 13 November, only Schönbrunn and Stephansplatz are open. The rest open on 13 November or later.

Which Vienna Christmas markets are open after Christmas and on New Year’s Eve?

If you’re planning a trip to Vienna between Christmas and New Year, the choice shrinks considerably. The markets in Rathausplatz, Stephansplatz, Maria-Theresien-Platz and Schwarzenbergplatz close on 26 December. The market at Belvedere Palace lasts until 31 December, but on New Year’s Eve it’s only open from 11am to 5pm.

Only two markets stay open until 6 January 2027. From 25 December, Schönbrunn is open daily from 10am to 7pm. The Wintermarkt in the Prater keeps its usual hours until 10pm, and on New Year’s Eve it’s even open from noon until 2am. The Eistraum ice rink in the park by the City Hall also keeps going after the Rathausplatz market has closed, until 6 January 2027, except on New Year’s Eve.

How to get from Bratislava to the Vienna Christmas markets: train, bus, boat or car?

Vienna is about an hour from Bratislava, and the easiest way there is by train or bus. I went to the Schönbrunn market by bus. Driving in Vienna during Advent isn’t easy; I’ll come to parking below.

Bratislava to Vienna by train for the Christmas markets

Regional express (REX) trains run from Bratislava to Vienna on two routes, each of them hourly. From the main station (hlavná stanica) they go via Marchegg, and from Petržalka via Kittsee. Both routes end at Wien Hauptbahnhof, and the journey takes about an hour. You don’t need a seat reservation: just sit in any free seat.

From the Hauptbahnhof, take the U1. Karlsplatz is two stops away and Stephansplatz three. For Schönbrunn, change at Karlsplatz to the U4.

Bratislava to Vienna by bus

Buses to Vienna leave from Nivy bus station (autobusová stanica Nivy). Slovak Lines’ express service, for example, runs via Bratislava Airport, the Most SNP bridge and Vienna Airport at Schwechat all the way to Wien Hauptbahnhof. According to the operator, the journey takes at least 70 minutes. If you buy the outward and return journeys together, Slovak Lines gives you 50% off the return.

  • Tip from Milan You can compare train and bus connections to Vienna on Omio.

Twin City Liner to the Christmas markets: does it sail in winter?

The Twin City Liner’s main season ended on 2 November 2026. For Advent it then runs special sailings from 27 November to 20 December, every Friday, Saturday and Sunday. These sailings, however, are timed for Viennese heading to the Bratislava markets.

In 2025 the boat left Vienna at 10.30am and didn’t set off back from Bratislava until 4.30pm. If the timetable is similar, it will only get you from Bratislava to Vienna in the late afternoon, and you’ll have to come back by train or bus. Twin City Liner publishes the exact times for 2026.

Driving to the Vienna Christmas markets: vignette, parking and P+R

To use the motorway from Bratislava to Vienna, you need an Austrian motorway vignette. In 2026 a one-day vignette costs €9.60 and a ten-day one €12.80. From 2027 the vignette will be digital only.

In Vienna itself, a short-stay parking zone covers the whole city. On weekdays from 9am to 10pm you can park on the street for a maximum of two hours, and you pay €1.70 for every half hour. At weekends and on public holidays, street parking is free. Watch out for residents-only spaces, though: you can’t park there even on a Saturday or Sunday. On some shopping streets you also pay on Saturdays from 8am to noon.

It’s cheaper to leave the car at a park-and-ride (P+R) car park. A whole day costs from €4.60, and they’re all right next to a U-Bahn station. If you come in on the A4 motorway from Bratislava, the nearest is P+R Erdberg on the U3. If you’re going to Schönbrunn, P+R Hütteldorf is handy, as it’s on the same U4 line.

Vienna public transport 2026: tickets, prices and U-Bahn stations near the Christmas markets

The markets in the centre (Rathausplatz, Maria-Theresien-Platz, Freyung, Am Hof and Stephansplatz) are only a few minutes’ walk apart. For Schönbrunn, the Prater or Belvedere, though, you’ll need the U-Bahn or a tram. A single ticket covers changes, too.

Wiener Linien ticket Price in 2026
Single journey, paper ticket from a machine €3.20
Single journey, digital ticket in the WienMobil app €3
24 hours Vienna, digital ticket €9.70
7 days Vienna, digital ticket €25.20

Wiener Linien stopped selling 48-hour and 72-hour tickets in January 2026. On top of that, fares go up again on 1 January 2027: a single journey will cost €3.30 on paper and €3.10 in the app. You’ll find the other prices and conditions on the Wiener Linien website.

  • Tip from Milan The 24-hour digital ticket pays off if you make at least four journeys. Three single digital tickets still work out cheaper.

If you’re going to Schönbrunn or the Prater in January, budget for the higher fares.

  • Tip from Milan According to Wiener Linien, tickets bought before a fare rise remain valid for six months after the change.

Vienna Christmas market prices: how much are punch and the mug deposit?

The markets haven’t published their 2026 prices yet. The most recent comparison of several markets at once came from Austrian media in 2024, so those are the figures I give here. Bear in mind that prices may have gone up since then.

Christmas market Punch or mulled wine Children’s punch Mug deposit
Rathausplatz €5–€8.50 €4.50 €5
Maria-Theresien-Platz €5.40–€8.50 About €4.80 €5
Am Hof €4.50–€6 €4 €5
Freyung €5, specialities up to €7.50 €4 €5
Spittelberg €4.80–€8.80 From €2.80 €3
Campus Universität Wien €5.40–€10.50 Alcohol-free punch about €4.50 €5
Riesenradplatz, Prater €5.50–€8.50 From €4 €5
Schönbrunn €5, berry punch €5.50 €2 for 125 ml €4 (2023)

2024 prices from vienna.at and heute.at; the Schönbrunn deposit is from 2023, according to wien.orf.at

In vienna.at’s test from December 2024, Spittelberg had the cheapest punch, at €5.35 on average. The university campus market had the highest average, €6.85, and its most expensive punch cost as much as €10.50.

How does the mug deposit (Häferlpfand) work at the Vienna Christmas markets?

Punch and mulled wine come in a ceramic mug, and the stall adds a deposit to the price of the drink. At most markets it was €5 in 2024. When you return the mug, you get your money back. You can also keep it as a souvenir, though, which is what the deposit is there for. Rathausplatz has new mugs for 2026, and they even have Braille on them.

Safety at the Vienna Christmas markets: pickpockets and paying by card

In November 2025 the Austrian interior ministry warned that Advent is high season for pickpockets. They work mainly in crowds, at the stalls and in queues. Typical tricks are bumping into you, spilling a drink on you or distracting you with a leaflet. So the police advise keeping your wallet close to your body, ideally in a zipped inside pocket. Keep your handbag and rucksack closed, and carry as little cash as you can. Pay by card if possible.

You can pay by card everywhere here, and there’s a cash machine just in case.

Schönbrunn Christmas market 2026: my tip for Vienna without the crowds

For me, the Christmas market at Schönbrunn is one of the prettiest and most charming in Vienna. It’s in the grounds of Schönbrunn Palace, one of the city’s best-known historic sights. The atmosphere here is calmer, which is nice, because the crowds are nowhere near as big as elsewhere. Now and then there are carol concerts or theatre performances too, which add even more to the charm.

Schönbrunn isn’t in the city centre, so naturally it draws fewer people than Vienna’s historic centre. That doesn’t mean it’s empty. But in my experience it’s much more pleasant to walk around, and you don’t feel the constant pressure of crowds bumping into you. For me, the Schönbrunn market has a far more authentic and festive atmosphere than the markets in the centre of Vienna.

  • Tip from Milan I went to Schönbrunn on a weekday evening, and there were just the right number of people.

Vienna Christmas markets without the crowds? Try Schönbrunn

In 2026 there are more than 90 stalls here. The market opened on 6 November 2026 and runs until 6 January 2027. Until 23 December it’s open daily from 10am to 9pm, on Christmas Eve until 4pm, and from 25 December until 7pm. Besides the stalls, there’s an ice rink, Eisstock lanes (Eisstock is the Austrian cousin of curling), a carousel, a Ferris wheel and a children’s train. The organiser publishes the current programme on the Weihnachtsmarkt Schönbrunn website.

How to get to the Schönbrunn Christmas market

To reach the Schönbrunn Christmas market, take the U4 straight to Schönbrunn station. The market is in the palace grounds, just a few minutes’ walk from the station: get off the train and walk through the park. From the Hauptbahnhof, take the U1 to Karlsplatz first and change there to the U4.

You can buy a ticket in the app or the old-fashioned way, from the machine at the station. In 2026 a single journey costs €3.20 (€3 in the app). From 1 January 2027 it goes up to €3.30 (€3.10 in the app).

Prices at the Schönbrunn Christmas market in Vienna
What are prices like at the Schönbrunn Christmas market in Vienna?

What are prices like at the Schönbrunn Christmas market in Vienna?

In a word: Austrian. Prices at the Schönbrunn Christmas market are a little higher than in Bratislava. In 2024, staples such as punch, hot chocolate or traditional Christmas food cost around €4 to €6. A traditional Christmas punch was about €4 to €5. If you buy your drink in a special mug, you can return the mug and get a few euros back.

Food such as sausages, boiled potatoes or Christmas pastries cost roughly €5 to €10. Souvenirs such as handmade ornaments or Christmas decorations started at €5, but better pieces cost more.

At one of the stalls I had an excellent Kaiserschmarrn for €8.50 and a spinach and feta crêpe for €9. I’d order the Kaiserschmarrn without a second thought. Apart from that, I had hot cocoa and Austrian pretzels. The prices in this section are from my visit in 2024, so they may be different in 2026. In 2026 the organiser also has a special menu for children.

Things for children to do at the Schönbrunn Christmas market

Besides the usual stalls selling Christmas goods, the Schönbrunn market has a few other attractions. For children, for example, there’s a small carousel near the market, and there are Christmas workshops where they can join in all sorts of creative activities, such as making decorations or painting.

Rides and fun for children at the Schönbrunn Christmas market in Vienna
Things for children to do at the Schönbrunn Christmas market in Vienna

It’s ideal for families, because the children get to make their own Christmas souvenirs. I’m not exactly a family with kids myself, but I have to say the children on that carousel looked thoroughly content.

For us adults who want to soak up the Christmas atmosphere in Vienna, there are the classic stalls with hot punch or mulled wine, and great food. Rewriting those bad memories was a good idea, I think. I’m glad I finally saw Vienna’s Christmas markets in a better light than the crush in the city centre over a cup of cocoa.

Which is the best Christmas market in Vienna? The other markets at a glance

In the run-up to Christmas, the whole of Vienna feels festive to me. In my view, though, the markets in the centre are full of tourists and lack atmosphere. I haven’t tried every market, but the overview below will help you choose, because which market is best depends mainly on what you’re looking for.

Wiener Christkindlmarkt in Rathausplatz: Vienna’s biggest Christmas market

The Christmas market in Rathausplatz is the biggest and best known in Vienna. It stands in front of the City Hall (Rathaus) and sells Christmas souvenirs, decorations, crafts, food and hot drinks. Yes, this is the very market that traumatised me.

According to wien.orf.at, about 2.8 million people came here in the 2024 season, so expect a crush. On the other hand, it has the most attractions. The Eistraum am Christkindlmarkt ice rink winds through the park by the City Hall, and children have a 12-metre double-decker carousel. The park also has a Christmas world for them, with a reindeer train, a nativity trail and their own ice rink. The market has accessible toilets and cash machines, and it closes as early as 26 December. You’ll find the programme on the Wiener Christkindlmarkt website.

Weihnachtsdorf in Maria-Theresien-Platz, between the museums

A few minutes’ walk from Rathausplatz, about 70 stalls stand between the Kunsthistorisches Museum and the Natural History Museum. They mainly sell traditional crafts and original gifts. On Christmas Eve the market is open from 11am to 4pm, and on 25 and 26 December from 11am to 7pm.

Weihnachtsdorf in Stephansplatz by St Stephen’s Cathedral

At the foot of St Stephen’s Cathedral, about 40 stalls sell Austrian-made products. Together with Schönbrunn, this was the first market to open, on 6 November. It runs until 26 December and closes at 4pm on Christmas Eve.

Altwiener Christkindlmarkt in Freyung: a tradition since 1772

There was a Christmas market in Freyung as early as 1772. Today you can buy crafts, glass decorations, traditional nativity scenes and ceramics here. From 4pm there’s Advent music in the square. The market doesn’t open until Saturday 14 November, and it closes on 23 December.

Am Hof Christmas market: crafts and choirs

Am Hof square is just a few steps from Freyung. Here too you’ll find quality crafts, along with Christmas music and choirs. The food and drink stalls stay open until 10pm, an hour longer than the rest of the market.

Art Advent in Karlsplatz: art, crafts and organic food

The market in front of the Karlskirche focuses on arts and crafts. Besides the stalls there are art installations, demonstration workshops, live bands and a programme for children. All the food and drink on sale is certified organic.

Spittelberg Christmas market in the lanes of a Biedermeier quarter

Spittelberg isn’t a square but a handful of narrow lanes: Spittelberggasse, Stiftgasse, Schrankgasse and Gutenberggasse. You’ll find crafts, food gifts and plenty of local, fair-trade and organic products. On weekdays, though, it doesn’t open until 2pm.

K&K Christmas market at Belvedere Palace

The market in the Belvedere Palace gardens has a baroque backdrop, and what it sells is in the spirit of Austria’s imperial past. What it has going for it is the dates: it’s open until 31 December, so between Christmas and New Year too. On Christmas Eve and New Year’s Eve, though, it’s only open from 11am to 5pm.

Weihnachtsdorf on the University of Vienna campus

The courtyard of the old general hospital, the Altes AKH, now the university campus, draws mainly students. Families come for the children’s train and the nostalgic carousel, and there are also two Eisstock lanes. On ordinary days it stays open the longest of all the markets in the table, until 11pm from Thursday to Saturday.

Weihnachtszauber in Schwarzenbergplatz by the Hochstrahlbrunnen fountain

Light installations illuminate the whole Hochstrahlbrunnen fountain and the park around it. Besides the stalls there’s a stage programme and activities for children. Karlsplatz is only a few minutes’ walk from here.

Wintermarkt in Riesenradplatz in the Prater

You’ll find the Christmas market in Riesenradplatz in the Prater amusement park, which families love for its rides. The market’s motto is Der Prater rockt (‘the Prater rocks’). There are rides for children, live music from gospel and soul to pop, and stalls selling food and gifts. On New Year’s Eve it’s the only market open until 2am.

Türkenschanzpark Christmas market

The market by the Turkish fountain in Türkenschanzpark promises a calmer atmosphere in a park setting. It sells food and crafts, with glassmakers and jewellery makers among the stallholders. At weekends there’s a craft workshop for children. It is, however, in the 18th district, a long way from the centre.

Bratislava Christmas markets 2026 as an alternative to Vienna

If you don’t fancy Vienna, Bratislava has Christmas markets too. In 2026 they run from 26 November to 3 January 2027, daily from 10am to 10pm. What I like about the Bratislava markets is that they’re compact and close together. You can walk between all of them, without taking the U-Bahn as you would in Vienna. You’ll find dates, prices, public transport and parking in my article on the Bratislava Christmas markets 2026.
