7 tips: where to go into nature in Bratislava without a car, from a local

Getting into nature in Bratislava without a car is easy. The city is surrounded by the Carpathians and by the floodplain forests along the Danube. Public transport takes you to Devín and Sandberg, Železná studnička, Kamzík, Koliba or Biely Kríž. If you want something more original, try the hike to Sakrakopec.

Where to go into nature in Bratislava without a car? The Slovak capital has one big advantage: it is surrounded by nature. In the north you have the Little Carpathians and the Bratislava city forests, in the south and east the floodplain forests and the Danube basin. So getting out of the city into nature without a car is no problem at all. Read on.

TIP: If you are looking for a really original hike in Bratislava without a car, try the hike to Sakrakopec, the site of a plane crash in the Carpathians.

Tip from Milan You can compare flights from London to Bratislava on Omio.

How to use public transport in Bratislava: where to buy a ticket and how much it costs

Using public transport in Bratislava is not hard at all. Most buses are modern, for example bus 61 from the airport has special luggage racks. Here is how to buy your ticket as cheaply as possible. Ticket prices change, so always check the current price list.

  • TIP: If you don’t feel like studying the details below, here is the short version. The cheapest single trip is with a yearly pass. If you don’t live in Bratislava, download the IDS BK app, where tickets are cheapest if you top up credit. The most expensive option is the SMS ticket.
  • TIP 2: If you are spending a whole day in Bratislava, either buy a 24-hour ticket or pay with your bank card at the validators on board, simply by tapping the card (no buttons to press). In 2026 the daily cap is €4.85. If you ride more, you don’t pay anything extra. When you change during the validity of your ticket, you don’t need to tap again, but tap the same card again for every new trip after the ticket has expired. If an inspector comes, your ticket is your bank card.

The details:

  1. The cheapest option is the yearly unlimited pass, if you live in Bratislava. Since June 2025 it costs €263 a year for zones 100 and 101, and you can use it without limits on all day and night lines.
  2. Ticket in the IDS BK app, where you need to top up credit or save a bank card. A 30-minute ticket costs €1.09 at full fare.
  3. Paper ticket from a ticket machine: €1.20 for 30 minutes at full fare. Most machines take payment cards.
  4. Electronic ticket bought at the validator on board: 30 minutes cost €1.09 at full fare, you just tap the electronic transport card you get issued.
  5. Electronic ticket bought at the validator on board and paid by bank card: this works through the TAPNI SA service. A 30-minute ticket costs €1.09 and is valid for transfers, you don’t need to tap again when you change. The daily cap is €4.85.
  6. SMS ticket: 40 minutes cost €1.20, send any character to 1140. 70 minutes cost €1.80, send any character to 1100. 24 hours cost €5.40, send any character to 1124.

A tip for cheaper public transport for families with children

A reader, Mirka, sent me a great tip in a Facebook comment:

„On Saturdays, Sundays and public holidays, one more adult and up to 3 children under 18 can travel with the holder of a basic day ticket. The condition is that the group includes 1 adult and 1 child (aged 0 to 18). This 24-hour ticket costs 7.60 and is valid in the WHOLE integrated transport system of the Bratislava Region and its surroundings (IDS BK). So trains, regional buses, city transport, everything.“

This rule still applies in 2026: at weekends and on public holidays, one basic 24-hour ticket covers up to two adults and three children. The price has changed since then, though. Since June 2025 the basic 24-hour ticket for Bratislava (zones 100 and 101) costs €5.40 on paper and €4.85 electronically. You can find the current price list on the IDS BK website.

@milan_bezmapy 🚋 Je to jednoduchá matematika, vždy bude verejná hromadná doprava lacnejšia a ekologickejšia. Auto má svoje opodstatnenie, no v meste ho netreba, že?

How to plan your route on Bratislava public transport

Personally, I like Google Maps best. It plans the route from A to B for me, including changes and the line number. The IDS BK app, imhd or Ubian work too, but as I said, Google Maps is enough for me.

Tips: where to go into nature in Bratislava without a car

In this article, in cooperation with Dopravný podnik Bratislava (the city transport company), I show you the favourite spots of Bratislava locals, with tips on how to get there by public transport. During the season, in 2026 from 28 March, special eco-friendly buses run to popular places in nature, so you can leave the car at home. These are the spots:

In the 2026 season the recreational lines 43, 144 and 154 run mainly at weekends and on public holidays. Seasonal lines change every year, so check the current timetable on the website of Dopravný podnik Bratislava before your trip.

Devín Castle, Devínska Kobyla and Sandberg without a car

Take bus 29 to Devín Castle, Devínska Kobyla and Sandberg. Devín Castle is one of the oldest and most important castles in Slovakia. It stands where the Danube and the Morava meet, in the Devín district on the edge of Bratislava.

In the castle grounds you will find several exhibitions and information boards about the history of the castle, the archaeological finds and the events that took place here. I brought my friends from the USA here and they were blown away.

TIP: On my blog, read what to see in Bratislava with a visitor from abroad.

The lookout tower on Devínska Kobyla and the former anti-aircraft missile base

From here it’s just a short hop to Devínska Kobyla or Sandberg. On Devínska Kobyla I recommend the lookout tower, and right opposite it is the former anti-aircraft missile base.

Sandberg is a nature monument on Devínska Kobyla in Bratislava, known for its fossil finds and its views. I recommend it at sunset 🙂

Železná studnička without a car, by bus 43

Bus 43 takes you from Patrónka to Železná studnička, a popular recreation area of Bratislava in the Little Carpathians and part of the Bratislava Forest Park. It’s a place for rest, hiking, sport and relaxing in nature. The name Železná studnička („little iron well“) comes from an iron-rich spring that was known for its healing effects.

In the past, the spring water was used to treat various illnesses, and in the 19th century the area was a popular spa. Spa houses and hotels were built here, they attracted lots of visitors and you can still see them today.

There are grill and picnic spots where you can cook your own food and spend a nice day with family and friends. Walk all the way to Kačín or to Partizánska lúka.

Koliba and Horský park without a car

Line 44 takes you up to Koliba and Horský park. Horský park is a bit smaller, but still interesting. Be sure to stop at Horáreň Horský park for a slice of punch cake or Bratislava rolls (bratislavské rožky), and have a look at the Pruger-Wallner garden, just a short walk from the café.

I love the new community centre they built here recently. You can come and sit here, make yourself a tea in the little house for a voluntary contribution, and then walk back to the centre of Bratislava past Slavín.

Biely Kríž and the Vydrica animal observatory without a car

Biely Kríž is a popular hiking and recreation area in the Little Carpathians near Bratislava. It’s a good place for hiking, cycling and resting in nature. Take line 52 to the terminus Potočná in Rača and continue on foot. Walk all the way to the Vydrica animal observatory, I recommend it at sunrise. If you don’t know where to go into nature in Bratislava without a car, try Biely Kríž.

Horáreň Krasňany without a car and a hike to Marianka

Line 154 takes you to Horáreň Krasňany. Here you can eat well at Šínweg, or bring your own sausages and grill them at the Horáreň on Pekná cesta (Hájovňa). My favourite hike from here goes all the way to Marianka, from where you can return by suburban bus. The whole hike takes under two hours and you can do it even with a sporty pushchair.

Where to go into nature in Bratislava without a car? Try Kamzík

Line 144 takes you up to Kamzík. Kamzík hill towers over Koliba and it is home to the Kamzík TV tower, one of the highest points in Bratislava. The tower has a restaurant and an observation deck with a panoramic view of Bratislava and its surroundings. Or try the lookout tower on Americká lúka.

There is also a sledging run, popular in winter. In summer there is a bobsleigh track, a bit of adrenaline for the whole family, plus dozens of hiking trails.

Where you can have a barbecue on Kamzík

Kamzík has various areas and designated barbecue spots. You can choose a place near the Kamzík TV tower or somewhere around it. Don’t forget to bring everything you need: charcoal, wood, a grill, skewers, plates, cutlery, paper towels and so on.

ZOO Bratislava without a car

Lines 31, 32, 37 and 39 go to ZOO Bratislava, a popular attraction for visitors of all ages. It’s in Mlynská dolina in Bratislava and has a wide range of animal species from different parts of the world.
